The only blip on the palm-tree lined horizon is Chief Minister E Palaniswami - EPS -who they say must quit. Yes the remote control is with Sasikala and Dhinakaran they say unabashedly referring to the aunt-nephew combo that occupies their party s top two spots. The 19 legislators all from Tamil Nadu s ruling party the AIADMK say that the Chief Minister has betrayed them by moving to expel VK Sasikala and her nephew TTV Dhinakaran. It is at the latter s behest that they are parked now at the Windflower Resort Spa safe from any attempts by the Chief Minister or his aides to lure them back to his side. The Windflower Resort Spa has well-furnished villas spacious rooms swimming pools and massages. EPS has to resign or face the consequences said V Pugalendhi. We want the Chief Minister replaced said CR Saraswathi though she was coy about who should head the government instead.Since December the AIADMK has been in churn - great seasickness-inducing churn that began with the death of Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa while in hospital. The party quickly adopted as its new leader Ms Sasikala who for decades lived with Ms Jayalalithaa and was seen as her next of kin. She in turn quickly chose the new Chief Minister- O Panneeerselvam (OPS) a regular understudy for Ms Jayalalithaa. But then Ms Sasikala decided she wanted more than just charge of the control booth and decided to become Chief Minister herself prompting an unlikely revolt from OPS. Decisive change was effected by the Supreme Court which ruled her guilty in a decades-old corruption case; the order lugged Ms Sasikala off to jail but not before she deposited loyalist EPS as Chief Minister and nephew Dhinakaran as the party s No 2. Regular briefings to her in prison would allow her to remain in charge as the top party boss she said. But Dhinakaran s squadron of corruption allegations made him an unpopular choice with a faction of the party as well as with the public which protested against his promotion on social media. In April he was arrested for allegedly trying to bribe Election Commission officials through a middleman. He was released in June but his jailing diminished his hold on his party.Meanwhile EPS and the still-sulking OPS embarked on long and circuitous negotiations to merge their two competing factions. Six months after circling each other they announced a reunion on Monday; OPS became Deputy Chief Minister. An essential condition of his return to the fold was the formal removal -and not just sidelining -of Sasikala and Dhinakaran. EPS tried to dodge this worried about pushback from a section of the party but finally capitulated.Mr Dhinakaran has since demonstrated his hold over 19 legislators effectively. In writing they have said EPS did not consult them about the reconciliation with EPS and does not enjoy their support which places them on the same side as opposition leader MK Stalin who says EPS must be asked to take a trust vote.EPS and OPS together command 134 legislators. To win a trust vote they need the support of 117. Mr Dhinakaran has eaten into their share. So far the 19 law-makers who say they are remote-controlled by him have not threatened to vote against the government stressing that their objection is to EPS remaining in charge.Yesterday they spent few hours in the temple town of Mahabalipuram moving as a pack from there to the Puducherry resort where they are now ensconced with no signs at all of cabin fever.
Even as 19 dissident MLAs loyal to ousted deputy general secretary TTV Dinakaran are staying put in a luxurious seaside resort in Puducherry https://ask.fm/thoughtfrday for the second successive day Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami the unified AIADMK asserted that it would soon convene the party s general council to remove jailed general secretary VK Sasikala. AIADMK sources said that Palaniswami has ordered all the ministers to return to Chennai on Thursday to decide on convening the general council. She is not in a position to execute the party work AIADMK deputy coordinator and Rajya Sabha MP R Vaithilingam who was expelled from the party by Dinakaran on Tuesday told reporters.Vaithilingam had earlier announced that Sasikala would be removed by the general council following O Panneerselvam faction s merger with the official faction. Making their first public appearance together at a rally in Ariyallur district in Central Tamil Nadu Palaniswami and his deputy Panneerselvam hit out at Dinakaran without naming him for attempting to derail the Amma s (Jayalalithaa s) government. In an apparent reference to the dissident MLAs letter to Governor Vidyasagar Rao Palaniswami said some people who were part of this government were suddenly making corruption charges. I don t know why. I am leaving it to their own conscience. I will tell you this is a government guided by the souls of two great leaders (party founder M G Ramachandran and late Jayalalithaa) he said. Panneerselvam urged the cadres to take a vow on the MGR s birth centenary celebration to protect Amma s government even by sacrificing their lives. This government will continue in the path shown by Jayalalithaa. Nobody has the wherewithal to pull down this government he claimed. Angered by the move to sideline Sasikala family Dinakaran removed four ministers and some other EPS loyalists from the party posts and replaced them with his loyal MLAs. Palaniswami had ousted Dinakaran from his deputy general secretary post on August 10 that paved way for merger with Panneerselvam faction. AIADMK cadres supporting Palaniswami meanwhile staged a protest alleging that the MLAs were allegedly kept under detention in the Windflower resort in Puducherry. They raised the slogans condemning Dinakaran and they burnt his effigy in protest. Former MLA Om Sakthi Sekar alleged that they were being forcefully put up in the resort and accused Dinakaran of using money power. Chorus grows for floor test Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have joined the chorus seeking trust vote to prove Palaniswami government s majority on the floor of the House. Congress joined its ally DMK by writing to the Governor in this regard. CPM CPI PMK and MDMK also urged the Governor to convene the Assembly to conduct floor test. Palaniswami government s support in the Assembly was reduced to 115 MLAs after the rebellion by 19 MLAs. The government requires 117 MLAs for a simple majority in the House of 233 members excluding a vacant seat.

As per the report state Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami has called an urgent meeting with senior ministers in Chennai on Thursday. The meeting will discuss two strategies: how to avoid a floor test and how to speed up the process of sacking Sasikala from the party a senior minister was quoted as saying by the paper. A minister close to the chief minister said that Sasikala s expulsion will bring back MLAs from the Dinakaran camp. That is the only reason for them to stay in the Dinakaran camp. They will have to come back and save this government if Sasikala and Dinakaran are expelled added. There may be 10 to 20 per cent Sasikala supporters who are expected to oppose the decision to expel her. We have to deal with that challenge Indian Express quoted him as saying. In the meantime supporters of Sasikala are likely to file petition in the Madras High Court seeking its intervention fearing that they may be prevented from attending the General Council meeting. TTV Dinakaran enjoys the support of 22 MLAs (including three Independents) in the 233-member state Assembly. Among 123 AIADMK MLAs nine more MLAs which included two ministers who lost key portfolios in the recent Cabinet reshuffle are reported to be backing Dinakaran. On AIADMK s plan to avoid floor test for now another minister said that situation was in their favour currently as Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao is likely to go abroad within next few days. When contacted the spokesperson of the governor said that later was in Mumbai and did not have his holiday plans Indian Express said.

We are going to initiate efforts to bring in a new CM with the help of our supporting MLAs Dhinakaran supporter and Andipatti MLA Thanga Tamil Selvan told mediapersons after a meeting with the Governor. Citing unprecedented constitutional crisis principal opposition DMK shot off a letter to the Governor asking him to convene a special assembly. The DMK leader also took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi saying PM who delivered an anti-corruption speech on August 15 has helped merge two corrupt factions in Tamil Nadu. He was reacting to allegations that the alliance was brokered by the BJP-led Central government. Following Stalin s demand for a floor test at least 15 MLAs supporting Dinakaran were shifted to two resorts in Puducherry. Fresh roadblocks seemed to have appeared before Palaniswami as 10 more MLAs are likely to join the Dinakaran camp as per sources in both camps. CHENNAI: Sidelined AIADMK deputy general secretary T T V Dhinakaran today removed Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar as the secretary of a party forum named after late Jayalalithaa. He replaced Udhayakumar with MLA S Mariappan Kennedy a loyalist. He also removed V V Rajan Chennappa MLA as party Madurai urban secretary a statement said. Dhinakaran nephew of V K Sasikala also appointed some of his supporters to various party posts two days after the merger of the two factions led by Palaniswami and rebel leader O Panneerselvam a former chief minister. Dhinakaran had dubbed the merger as a betrayal of party general secretary Sasikala. He had yesterday sacked senior leader and Rajya Sabha MP R Vaithilingam from the the party. The move came a day after Vaithilingam a Palaniswami loyalist said steps would be taken for the removal of Sasikala from the AIADMK. MLAs loyal to Dhinakaran had told Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao they have lost confidence in Chief Minister EK Palaniswami. The MLAs are currently camping at a resort in neighbouring Puducherry. The main opposition DMK has demanded a floor test in view of the rebellion in the AIADMK.
Chennai: HighlightsAIADMK announced merger http://www.gtactix.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=11117;sa=summary between two rival factions yesterday Some MLAs supporting VK Sasika oppose merger and move to expel her Her nephew TTV Dhinakaran has moved them to resort to keep them together Nineteen legislators of Tamil Nadu s ruling AIADMK are reportedly being moved to a resort outside Chennai as the party s sidelined number 2 TTV Dhinakaran attempts to keep them together and away from the influence of Chief Minister E Palaniswami. This morning these MLAs met the state s Governor demanding that Mr Palaniswami be removed as Chief Minister because he has lost their confidence. They have called yesterday s merger between the two AIADMK factions led by Mr Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam illegal and are opposed to the decision to expel party chief VK Sasikala who is in jail. The MLAs have stressed that they are not giving up their membership of the AIADMK nor are they withdrawing support to the party s government. They want a change of chief minister. The MLAs are being taken to a resort either in Mahabalipuram or Pondicherry sources said though Team Dhinakaran has denied that they will be sequestered. One of them said they were in Mahabalipuram about 55 km from Chennai for dinner. In identical letters to Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao the 19 legislators have asked him to to intervene and institute the constitutional process accusing Mr Palaniswami of corruption abuse of power and favouritism. They have alleged that by merging with the O Panneerselvam or OPS faction that voted against him in a trust vote in the assembly only six months ago Chief Minister Palaniswami has forfeited the confidence of the people and so they are withdrawing their support to him.Opposition leader MK Stalin of the DMK has said that given the new circumstances the Governor must ask Mr Palaniswami or EPS to seek another confidence vote in the state assembly. After yesterday s merger the AIADMK has 134 legislators in the 234-member assembly. That is only 17 more than the 117 needed for a majority. With 19 MLAs rebelling Chief Minister Palaniswami could be in trouble if he has to face a vote. TTV Dhinakaran appointed by his aunt Ms Sasikala as the AIADMK s deputy general secretary before she went to jail did not accompany the rebel legislators to meet the Governor today. In a series of tweets last night he vowed to weed out betrayers seen to refer to Mr Palaniswami whose accession to the top post too was arranged by Ms Sasikala before she left Chennai for the Bengaluru prison where she is lodged in a corruption case. The AIADMK had split weeks after the death in December of its powerful chief J Jayalalithaa when OPS forced by Ms Sasikala to step down as chief minister rebelled. With her plan to be chief minister scuttled by the court order convicting her in a corruption case Ms Sasikala had sequestered more than 120 of the AIADMK s legislators at a resort outside Chennai before Mr Palaniswami s trust vote. The two factions had been working on the merger for months and finally came together yesterday with EPS and OPS shaking hands and making a joint announcement. The expulsion of Ms Sasikala was a key demand of the OPS camp.Under the merger agreement OPS who was forced by Ms Sasikala to step down as chief minister in February this year has settled for the role of deputy to EPS the man who worked under him as a minister months ago.

Here is what FM Arun Jaitley saidSidelined party Deputy General Secretary T T V Dhinkaran has dubbed the merger of two factions of the AIADMK as a betrayal of party general secretary V K Sasikala. Breaking his silence on the sudden developments leading to the merger of the factions led by Chief Minister K Palaniswami and O Panneerselvam yesterday Dhinakaran in a series of tweets last night also questioned the durability of the arrangement. It is not a merger. It is a commercial agreement reached for self-interest and hunger for positions and to protect posts he claimed. Stating that his political journey would continue he vowed to protect the party and retrieve its Two Leaves symbol which has been frozen by the Election Commission ahead of the now cancelled April 14 by-election to R K Nagar Assembly constituency. Dhinakaran nephew of Sasikala said he was suffering from a sore throat and fever and had been advised rest and would meet media tomorrow. Only god knows how long this (merger) will hold. In 1989 in deference to the wishes of cadres Amma (late chief minister Jayalalithaa) was accepted as the general secretary and all united under her leadership he said. Dhinakaran was referring to the then reunification of the party after a split following the death of AIADMK founder and late chief minister M G Ramachandran in December 1987. The split ensued after Ramachandran s wife Janaki was appointed chief minister and Jayalalithaa claimed the support of the cadres. Also watch But today the cadres cannot digest the merger which is accompanied with the announcement that steps would be taken to expel the general secretary (Sasikala) who was accepted by themselves he claimed adding that it was a betrayal . Dhinakaran claimed not only the AIADMK cadres but even the public would not forgive those who betrayed the general secretary who made Pannerselvam and Palaniswami the chief ministers after the death of Jayalalithaa . Charging that it was Panneerselvam who was instrumental in the freezing of the AIADMK symbol he sought to know how the cadres would accept it. How can they (Palaniswami camp) join hands with Panneerselvam who till yesterday was branding the regime ruling the state as corrupt he said. His tweets came hours after the factions merged and Panneerselvam who had challenged Sasikala s leadership was appointed the deputy chief minister and his close aide K Pandiarajan a minister. After the merger one of the leaders of Palaniswami camp R Vaithilingam had said that steps would be taken to expel Sasikala by the General Council a key demand made by Panneerselvam.

O Panneerselvam who regularly subbed for her when she was alive was first named her replacement but Ms Sasikala soon moved to take over the state herself. However the Supreme Court then found Ms Jayalalithaa and her guilty of a decades-old corruption case and ordered her to prison. Before her incarceration in neighbouring Karnataka she chose loyalist E Palaniswami to take over as Chief Minister.Since then a third camp has been created in the party -- one headed by Ms Sasikala s nephew TTV Dhinakaran who is named in a jumble of corruption cases.Mr Panneerselvam s faction of about 10 legislators- enough to make a difference in a trust vote -wanted Ms Sasikala and Mr Dhinakaran expelled from the party before they reunited with Mr Palaniswami s larger group.
